Tokyo is the capital of Japan and one of the most important cities in the world. It is a huge, modern, and bustling city where towering skyscrapers, shopping districts, and cutting-edge technology blend with temples, shrines, and much more traditional neighborhoods.
About 14 million people live in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, making it one of the most populous urban areas in Japan. In addition, many people commute daily from nearby cities to work or study there.
Japan is a constitutional and parliamentary monarchy. The emperor primarily serves a symbolic role, and the government is led by a prime minister. Tokyo also has its own Metropolitan Government, headed by a governor.
Among the city’s best-known areas are Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza, Odaiba, and the Meiji Shrine. It also boasts one of the most extensive subway and train networks in the world, which is essential for getting around such a large city.

HISTORY

Japan has a fascinating history that spans thousands of years. It is believed that the first settlements date back to the Jomon period (14,000 B.C.), when hunter-gatherers began to form communities. The Yamato period (250-710 A.D.) consolidated imperial power and brought cultural influences from China and Korea. Between the 12th and 19th centuries, the country was under the control of the shoguns, military leaders who ruled on behalf of the emperor. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Japan experienced a long isolation, but with the Meiji Restoration in 1868, it modernized rapidly. After the devastation of World War II, Japan transformed into a global economic power, known for its technology and culture.

FOOD

Japanese cuisine is known for its focus on freshness and aesthetic presentation. Sushi, made with rice and raw fish, is one of the most iconic dishes, while sashimi features only the fish. Ramen, a noodle soup, is popular and varies in regional flavors. Other typical dishes include tempura, fried seafood and vegetables, and okonomiyaki, a type of savory pancake. Rice is a staple food, and miso, used in soups and sauces, is fundamental in the cuisine. Japanese gastronomy is based on respect for ingredients and the seasons.

WEATHER

Japan has a diverse climate, with cold winters in the north and warm summers in the south. The seasons are distinct, offering beautiful spring and autumn landscapes. To fully enjoy it, visit in spring (sakura) or autumn (red leaves). Wear appropriate clothing and check the weather forecast, as the climate can vary.

CURRENCY

In Japan, the official currency is the Japanese yen (JPY). Although credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist establishments, it is advisable to carry cash, as many restaurants, small shops, and markets do not accept cards. ATMs may not be available for all foreign cards, so it is recommended to withdraw money at banks or convenience stores like 7-Eleven, which offer services for tourists.
